The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali is the most fundamental and important text of the yoga tradition. It is composed of 195 terse sutras and is a guidebook to the study and practice of yoga meditation leading to inner peace.
The second chapter – Sadhana Pada – refers to personal practice. This chapter is for those whose minds have not yet become still. It begins with Kriya Yoga, the yoga of action leading to stillness, and ends with subtle breath practices that enable the student to enter the quiet depth of mediation. The chapter also introduces and explores astanga yoga, the eight steps in the practice of yoga.
This lecture is an introduction to the ideas and practices presented in Chapter 2 and is open to all students of yoga meditation.
“In chapter one we learn that a steady mind is essential for achieving the higher states of meditation and samadhi. The second chapter suggests means to enable a fluctuating mind to reach steadiness.”
