The yoga exercises practiced in this class are classic hatha yoga postures done in a mindful manner. Each class starts with warm up stretches, which systematically touch on most muscle groups and joints from head to toe. All postures taught in this class include an emphasis on utilizing diaphragmantic breathing while mentally focusing attention on muscles and joints being used. Therefore we are not only training the body to be healthy, flexible and strong, but also developing breath awareness and mental focus.
Moving into and out of the postures slowly and consciously, and holding the posture until release and relaxation is achieved helps foster pleasure in doing yoga both in the classroom and at home. The participants in this yoga class are frequently encouraged to honor their body by atuning to the resistance point in their stretch so as not to over extend and cause themselves pain or discomfort.
This class is taught by Frank Dettloff who has been practicing yoga for more than thirty years and it is structured according to the teachings of Swami Rama and the Himalayan Yoga and Meditation tradition.
